CONVERSAMOS "Can We Talk?" is a fun, interactive workshop series to help parents talk to their children ages 6-14 about self-esteem, sexuality, peer pressure, mixed messages, violence and drugs. This workshop is available statewide for a limited time at no cost.

“Can We Talk?” is appropriate for parents and caregivers of all literacy levels. A culturally sensitive Spanish version, ¿Conversamos?, is also available.

The workshops are based on the idea that parents want to communicate their values to their children and that children need good, factual information and decision-making skills in order to remain healthy.

The School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce the receipt of a research grant totaling $50,000 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM). Faculty of the School of Library and Information Science will deliver multi-part workshops on the provision of consumer health information services to Spanish-speaking clients. A series of four workshops will be offered to information professionals and other providers throughout South Carolina, using a suite of five existing NN/LM courses. Workshop attendees will form the core of a group of respondents who will inform the process of building a set of direct-to-consumer workshops on consumer health information resources and services for recent Hispanic immigrants and their families.

Ms. Heidi Hormann serves as principal investigator, while Dr. Feili Tu and Dr. Judy Marley are the co-principal investigators.

The Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies at USC was created in 2004 to gather and disseminate information on the Hispanic/Latino community in South Carolina and the Southeast.
